This is something that happened to me just last night while I was working on my Base build.
I have been putting a bit of time into this thing that I'm building lately, and though I say it myself, it's beginning to take shape. All of the major features are there. I've been through two very nice picks made of the finest diamondium, and about 20 ordinary iron picks too. The thing is, this build is all pretty much underground, away from prying eyes, and it's meant to be pretty safe from mob trouble. Well, better than if it were right out there on the surface, at any rate.
So, as I said, the biggest part of the build is done, and I'm kind of working on the trimmings and the niceties. It's very quiet work, now that all of the heavy construction machinery has gone home. I do hear the occasional zombie, and I get a bit nervous - checking that slab in the hallway is still there and I haven't totally forgotten to place it and left the entrance wide open or anything. Then I calm down and relax back into my work, reassuring myself that they are just in some nearby cave, and won't bother me.
But then, just as I'm tinkering around with some little feature - a set of sandstone steps more than like - and it happened!
Karakkka-boooommm-bang-craaaaaack-bump-bump!!!
My heart stopped. I turned around three times (that I'll admit to) but couldn't work out what I had just heard and what was going on. It was a bit like thunder, but went on longer than a single thunderclap, and then it never came back. I'm sure a storm would continue, right?
The thing was, I knew that sound. I have heard it before once or twice, and something made me associate it with terrible calamity. It brought back feelings of my blood running cold, and a dull empty feeling of loss.
It was the sound of a desert temple going up when some cack-handed mob steps on the pressure-plate!! That's what it was. I wish I had been recording, so that I could have replayed the sound at the very least. I would also have been able to let you see and hear the scene, rather than having to find ways of describing it.
The thing was, I have seen absolutely no evidence of a desert temple anywhere near where I am working. Not the tiniest sign! So, as soon as my bowels had returned to normal, and I had checked all of my build over (twice) for signs of damage, I went out on a recce. Everything looked normal. No sign of a massive post-explosion cave-in. No change at all. Just desert hills.
Then I saw it!
Just a strip of sandstone in the desert sands. And another next to it. And another. It was like looking at an optical illusion, the moment the 'other image' suddenly becomes clear. The best hidden temple I've seen ... and it is literally right behind my Base. Admittedly not by the entrance. The side that I never go round, that's where it is. And of course, the zombie noises that I kept hearing - yes - they were all playing in the darkened, buried temple until one guy has put a foot wrong - fatefully wrong - and blown the whole chamber to pieces.
I've taken a screenshot, though it doesn't look quite so well camouflaged when you know what you're looking at. I'll wait until everyone has definitely finished playing before I post it up, just so it doesn't act as a big spoiler.
[edit] Now it can be revealed!
But of course I have no idea what was inside. Maybe all that gold that various people were scouring the area for. And I get a very odd feeling knowing that I might have been just 1 or 2 blocks away from knocking my way through to it while I was clearing the area for my base.
All very strange. These things happen, and they form part of the back-drop to Base Race - the bits you don't see on YouTube, but will certainly stay in my memory :=]
